Barbeque Origami Shirt Card

I was a bit disappointed that this card hasn't photographed better - the oranges look too bright here, the real thing is so much better!

For this one print:-

The Tropical Origami Shirt sheet onto quality white paper
The Mini Beer & Drinks cans sheet onto quality white paper
The Mini Party food sheet onto quality white paper
The denim background onto quality white paper
The orange gingham background onto quality white paper
The orange hibiscus background onto quality white paper
The Party Shirt wording sheet onto quality white card

The orange gingham sheet can downloaded for free by clicking here. Click on the link to open the image in Adobe Acrobat reader - if you need it you can download it for free by clicking on the button below.

To make the card, cover the front of a white 7" x 5" card blank with the denim background paper using double-sided tape.

To make the origami shirt:-

Start off with a piece of paper that is 13cm x 7.5cm or one of our ready-done origami shirt pieces which has pre-printed guide lines on it. If you're using the latter, the triangular guide line arrangement should be at the top of the piece (hard to see here).

Fold the paper in half, with the pattern still visible, and then unfold it. Our ready-done shirts have small guide lines at each end - use a ruler to emboss along this line first before folding for a really accurate fold.

Turn the paper over and fold the two long edges in towards the centre crease so that they meet neatly in the middle.

Turn up the two bottom middle corners so that they meet the outer edge of the paper. This will form two diagonal creases.

Turn up the bottom of the paper and fold it over where the flaps from the previous step end.

Stick your fingers inside the folded up area. Grab hold of the tip of the corner piece on one side. Pull it out and to the side. Now repeat this for the corner piece on the other side.

Now tuck each corner back inside itself to form the sleeves.

Turn the paper over and emboss the straight crease line with an embossing tool or cocktail stick, then fold (embossing it first makes for a neater fold).

Turn the paper over again and emboss the two angled crease lines before folding them in to form the collar. Make sure that the tips of the collar meet.

Finally fold the bottom of the paper up and under the tips of the collar. Shirt folding is complete!

When you have completed the shirt, use strips of double sided tape on each side to seal it shut.

To make the beer or soft drink cans:-

Cut out your chosen can with a craft knife and ruler. Add wide double-sided tape to the printed end of the strip and remove the backing.

Using a cocktail stick, start rolling the paper strip from the non-printed end so that the design is on the outside of the roll. Once you've got it going, take out the cocktail stick and continue to roll whilst keeping the roll even.

When you get towards the end of the strip, let out the roll a little until the 'can' is the size that you want, then finish rolling so that the tape seals it shut.

To make the mustard and ketchup bottles:-

Make up the main part of the bottle in the same way as the beer cans although the bottles are rolled more tightly and don't need to be let out very much. Seal with double-sided tape as before.

For the lids, there is a strip of white paper at the side of each bottle - or if you've mucked this up, just cut a 4mm strip of white paper. You'll only need about half the length for this one.

This time add tiny strips of double-sided tape to each end of the strip, adding it to one end so that the tape's about 1.5cm in (this is so you don't end up sticking it to your cocktail stick!). Start rolling up the paper from this end but rather than keeping it even, you need to graduate the paper slightly as you wind it to form the nozzle for the bottle. Once you've formed the nozzle, continue to wind it evenly to form the main part of the bottle top.

This is a bit fiddly and I had to make several before I was happy with the result (but I was ecstatic when it came out perfectly!).

To connect the bottle and bottle lid, cut down a cocktail stick so that it's shorter than their joint height, add tacky glue to the end of the stick and push it into the 'bottle'. Add another blob of tacky glue to the end of the cocktail stick that's still showing, then push on the lid. Allow to dry thoroughly.

For the burger:-

Roughly cut out the burger shape from the sheet and stick it to a piece of dark brown fun foam with double-sided tape. Once stuck, cut out the burger/fun foam with small scissors. You can use a punch if you have one to fit but it's not essential as a lovely home-made burger wouldn't be a perfect circle anyway!

For the bag of charcoal:-

Cut the bag from the sheet with a craft knife and ruler, then emboss all the lines lightly with a cocktail stick or fine-nib embossing tool (which will make folding much easier). Fold the bag and seal the side shut with double-sided tape. Use the guide lines on the bottom of the bag to make a gussetted bag that folds up like a present, then seal shut with d-s tape. Finally, fold over the top of the bag twice and seal shut with a small amount of tacky glue (hold with a peg or bulldog clip until dry).

For the kebab:-

Use your imagination for this one! There's nothing printed here - I've just threaded little pieces of fun foam and red bead 'tomatoes' onto a length of silver craft wire. Make a loop in the craft wire at one end to stop the bits falling off, then add a little tacky glue to the other end before threading on the last piece, to keep it all in place.

To make up the card, stick an 11 x 5cm piece of the orange gingham background paper to a larger piece of silver metallic card with double-sided tape, then trim round with a craft knife and ruler to leave a small border.

Cut out a 5cm square of the orange hibiscus paper, then add both this and the gingham panel to the card with double-sided tape.

Add the miniatures that you've made using a strong tacky glue such as Aleene's (the charcoal bag can be added with double-sided tape).

Cut out a Happy Birthday greeting and Barbeque! wording from the wording sheet and mount them onto silver metallic card. Add the birthday greeting to the card with sticky pads so that it overlaps the hibiscus paper slightly.

Finally, arrange the origami shirt and Barbeque! wording at the top of the card and stick into place with double-sided tape.
