Crafty Cut-Outs: Cutting Dies in Crafting

A cutting die, though the name may suggest it, is neither a paint-adjacent liquid, nor the singular form of a board game accessory. It is, however, a handy metal crafting tool that comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes, featuring a sharp, raised edge intended for cutting out.

You could think of die cutting as being akin to using a cookie cutter, with the intended use being for paper instead of dough. Die cutting is somewhat of a two-part process though, as it requires the use of a die cutting machine in order to work. Sort of like an embossing machine, the die cutting machine applies pressure to the die, allowing you to cut out the shape cleanly.

Above is just one example of the many, many cutting dies that we stock at Printable Heaven. You can view the rest of our stock here

Stuck for ideas on how to use cutting dies in your work? See below for some of our tips!

1). Make a raised design for a card

Looking to make a raised design, but you don't have access to embossing tools? No problem! You can create fantastic three-dimensional effects using card cut-out with dies. Simply layer them on top of one another for an embossed effect on your cards!

2). Decorate an object, garment or bag

The three-dimensional effect you can achieve with cutting dies doesn't just have to apply to cards. You can also adorn your die cut designs onto anything you'd like; perhaps a bag, jacket, cup or vase!

3). Create Customised Labels

Using cutting dies to create that raised, three-dimensional effect we talked about, you can really get creative with label making!
