We Wish You a Crafty Christmas: Ten Crafting Ideas for the Holiday Season

Now that our somewhat cheesy title has (hopefully) captured your attention, we want to share with you ten fun and creative crafts that you can have a go at this Christmas. The holiday season is perfect for crafting; cozy days spent indoors and family time are great for incorporating a bit of crafting into. See below our list of ideas for some Christmas crafting inspiration!

1). Christmas Stencil Cards

Left your Christmas cards a little too late and need a fancy design ASAP? Don't worry, us too. Luckily, we have a variety of stylish and fun Christmas-themed stencils that can give your homemade cards a festive flair, sure to stand out on any mantelpiece. Simply take a blank card (or one of our holiday-themed textured cards, hint hint) and apply the stencil to the front of the card. You can use paint or ink to make your stencil design, or if you like, you can draw pencil outlines and fill them in yourself!

2). Homemade Tree Ornaments

Making your own Christmas tree ornaments is such a relaxing and uncomplicated way to craft. We offer a wide range of wooden shapes, and plenty of these are Christmas themed. We stock wooden Christmas trees, mittens, snowflakes, stars and more! These can be a little plain right out of the packet, but that's where you and your craft-savvy brain come in. These can be painted, embellished, or stuck together to add a more three-dimensional effect, perfect for stringing up on your Christmas tree.

3). Ribbon Wreath

We have ribbons aplenty in our stock, but they can be used for other purposes than just putting the finishing touch on a wrapped gift. Why not give a DIY ribbon wreath a try? Whilst this particular idea is perhaps a little trickier to pull off than a simple card or embellished ornament, it's still such a great way to make use of any ribbon you may have in your collection (we would know, we have lots).

4). Die-cut Christmas Fridge Magnets

There's nothing quite like spreading Christmas cheer to every single surface and appliance in your house (take that with a pinch of salt), and one way to tastefully bring a little festive magic to your kitchen without candles and fairy lights is to create adorable Christmas fridge magnets using cutting dies. Simply take a foam sheet and a seasonal cutting die (we stock a variety of holiday sentiment dies, reindeer, mistletoe, stockings and more), cut out your shape and embellish it however you choose. Next, glue a ceramic magnet to the back, and you have  a quick, easy and undeniably cute Christmas ornament.

5). DIY Gift Bag

Tired of pre-patterned gift bags? Why not go the extra mile to up your gift presentation by making your own! We recommend a standard brown paper bag as your baseline for such a project, and from there, you can decorate it however you choose. For a particularly stylish design on the front, we would recommend utilising an inked or painted stencil, though you can decorate it however your heart desires. We stock some lovely ribbons, twine and gift tags, which can be added as a finishing touch.

6). Paper Crown

This list wouldn't be at all complete if we didn't factor in some crafting ideas that are fun for the whole family, and simple DIY paper crowns are such a great way for everyone to join in, especially the kids. Using our paper and cardstock products, you can create fun Christmas crowns with only A4 paper, scissors and a pencil.

7). Embossed Velvet Stocking

Brace yourselves for a couple of slightly more complex crafts; perhaps leave the kids out of this one. Did you know that you can emboss beautiful designs onto velvet using just a stamp and an iron? At Printable Heaven, we offer a variety of Christmas-themed stamps in a range of different shapes, which are perfect for use in a project such as this. Simply place the fabric over the stamp, and set your iron between medium and high heat. Press down and leave for about ten seconds, and then you should see a imprint of the fabric coming through. Remove the fabric from the stamp, and you should have a lovely embossed design! Give this a try with a velvet stocking.

8). Christmas Scene Embroidery Hoop

This one's for the embroidery fiends. The popularity of embroidery hoops is undeniable. One only needs to head over to Etsy to realise this, and if you're a dab hand at embroidery, there's a good chance you've tried it yourself; maybe you're even an expert at it! If this is your thing, you should give this a whirl! Using a wooden embroidery hoop as your baseline, stitch a Christmas scene! Depending on your level of ability, this could be anything from a single image of an ornament, holly leaf or Santa hat, or something as complex as a Nativity scene.

9). Christmas Diorama

The word "diorama" might conjure up images of a sprawling and highly detailed three-dimensional model, maybe of a city or a railway track, and if that's the case, you might find yourself a little dissuaded from attempting to make one over the Christmas period. Bear with us here, a diorama needn't be a dramatic feat of small-scale architecture. Here's what we're proposing; a diorama built on an old, weathered coaster. We all have one, two or seven laying around; chipped, coffee stained and forgotten. You can repurpose these by painting them and using them as stands for adorable festive scenes constructed with decorative miniatures, such as an evergreen forest, wintery town or Nativity scene.

10). Yarn Ornaments

Another one for the folks who are adept with a needle and thread. Yarn ornaments are a wonderful addition to any Christmas tree, and are a breath of fresh air next to hard plastic or glass baubles. If you're adept with a needle and thread, you can create baubles from yarn, or if you're even more adept, why not have a go at crafting a snowman, choirboy or Santa Claus?
