All of the illustrations in this collection are by Howard Pyle (1853-1911) and his sister Katharine Pyle (1863-1938) who were from Delaware, USA.
Howard Pyle began teaching art at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University) in 1894. After 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration, namely the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. Some of his notable students included N.C. Wyeth, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Anna Whelan Betts, Elizabeth Shippen Green and Jessie Willcox Smith.
Pyle is well-known for his illustrations of pirates and is credited with creating what is now the modern stereotype in pirate dress. His work influenced the design of the costumes of movie pirates such as Errol Flynn and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.
In 1910 Pyle and his family went to Italy as he planned to study the old masters. He felt ill and drained of energy and after just a year there, he died in 1911 of a kidney infection at the age of 58.
Katharine Pyle is the sister of Howard Pyle, 10 years his junior. She was educated at the Women's Industrial School and Drexel Institute, then studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the New York Art Students' League.
She wrote over 30 books over the course of her career and illustrated others. Her work also appeared in the Ladies' Home Journal and Harper's Bazaar.
Images in this collection range from 1134 pixels wide/tall to 3570px wide/tall.
